Israeli Military Issues Call-Up Notices to Ultra-Orthodox Community

The Israeli military recently issued call-up notices to 1,000 members of the ultra-Orthodox community, a move intended to boost army ranks but one that could escalate tensions between religious and secular Israelis. The Supreme Court decision last month revoked blanket exemptions for Jewish seminary students from military service, a tradition in place since Israel’s establishment in 1948 when the ultra-Orthodox community was small.

Opposed by religious parties in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, the new policy has strained the coalition during the ongoing conflict in Gaza. While some ultra-Orthodox leaders fear losing religious identity by serving alongside secular Israelis, others support the IDF’s creation of units for the ultra-Orthodox.

Despite calls to burn call-up orders, some Haredi recruits reported for duty, while others remain steadfast in their opposition to military service. Pressure mounts for a compromise as further conscription notices are expected, with the government seeking to resolve the issue to maintain coalition stability amid regional challenges.
