Renowned anti-whaling activist Paul Watson has been arrested in Greenland under an international warrant issued by Japan. The Captain Paul Watson Foundation (CPWF) revealed that Watson was apprehended as his ship made a pit stop in Nuuk en route to intercept Japan’s new whaling factory vessel in the North Pacific.
Footage circulated by CPWF captured the moment Watson was handcuffed on the John Paul DeJoria ship and taken into custody by police officers. He is set to appear before a district court, where extradition to Japan may be considered.
Known for his aggressive tactics at sea, Watson has led campaigns through Sea Shepherd and CPWF against whaling practices. Japan, which justifies whale consumption as cultural and for food security reasons, remains silent on the arrest.
The CPWF suspects that the reactivation of the arrest warrant is politically motivated, coinciding with Japan’s launch of the new factory ship. Watson’s history of clashes with Japanese whaling vessels has led to this latest legal intervention, signaling a potential escalation in anti-whaling efforts.
