Global AIDS conference begins in Munich – DW – 07/22/2024

Welcome to the 25th International AIDS Conference!

More than 10,000 doctors, public health experts, and activists from 175 countries are gathered in Munich for the world’s largest annual conference on HIV and AIDS. The 5-day event aims to share research and best practices in combating the HIV virus, which affects over 40 million people worldwide.

Declining Progress in the Fight Against HIV/AIDS

Although AIDS-related deaths have decreased significantly over the years, progress is at risk as government funding declines and stigmatization continues. The UN’s goal of reducing new infections and AIDS-related deaths by over 90% between 2010 and 2030 is in jeopardy.

The Current Situation

Despite a decrease in infections compared to previous years, the number of new cases recorded in 2022 is still concerning. The most affected regions are Eastern and Southern Africa, with an increase in infections seen in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and Latin America.

Understanding HIV/AIDS

AIDS is caused by infection with HIV, which is transmitted through unprotected intercourse, contaminated needles, or blood transfusions. With advancements in antiretroviral drugs, HIV has become a manageable chronic condition rather than a terminal illness.
