German Embassy and UNICEF Hand Over New Water Supply System in Torit, South Sudan
Residents of Torit in the Eastern Equatoria State of South Sudan celebrated a historic moment on Monday as the German Embassy and UNICEF handed over a rehabilitated and expanded water supply system to the state authorities. The German Government’s funding of USD 2 million made this project possible, benefiting 43,800 residents in Torit.
The upgraded system includes two boreholes with solar-powered pumps, a 25-kilometer pipeline network, and additional storage capacity. This initiative, part of German-funded projects in South Sudan, aims to improve access to clean water and promote sustainable development in the region.
Christian Sedat, the German Ambassador, emphasized the importance of clean water access for development and reiterated Germany’s commitment to supporting South Sudan’s peace process. UNICEF, in collaboration with local authorities, implemented the project to ensure that vulnerable communities, particularly women and children, have access to safe and reliable water sources.
The completion of this water supply system signifies a significant step towards improving sanitation, hygiene, and overall well-being in Torit. Germany’s continued support for South Sudan’s development, through various initiatives including water supply projects, highlights their dedication to the country’s progress and prosperity.
