The recent People’s Assembly elections have concluded, signaling a new era according to the regime. Key figures with controversial economic activities in Damascus and Aleppo were notably absent, while new members with foreign affiliations joined the Council. Over 62% of the Assembly saw turnover, with 156 new members.
Economic arms of Russia and Iran in the Council
Critics question the exclusion of certain figures while individuals with external ties like Bilal Naal, linked to Russia, remain in the Legislative Council. Newly emerged member Fahd Darwish, with dual nationality, represents Iran’s interests in the Council.
Military leaders in parliament
Jihad Barakat and Firas Ali al-Jaham, known for their controversial backgrounds, secured seats in the Council. Their victories hint at significant developments, especially in the context of fuel trade disputes.
Seven million out of 20 million
Despite official participation figures, actual voter turnout was alarmingly low, with reports of voter fraud. Judge Jihad Murad disclosed 19.2 million eligible voters, with 7.3 million participating.
