Azerbaijan urges COP29 to address environmental terrorism in Karabakh – expert

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 22. Azerbaijan’s opportunity to host COP29 presents a chance to address global climate issues and showcase its environmental challenges, according to Amin Mammadov, chairman of the Public Council under the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources. One pressing issue is the aftermath of environmental damage in the Karabakh region during Armenian occupation, which resulted in the loss of 60,000 ha of green areas and water pollution.

Azerbaijan aims to restore Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur as “green” zones with zero waste and green energy facilities, highlighting its commitment to combating climate change. COP29 in Baku will be a platform to seek international support and discuss climate financing. Mammadov also stressed the importance of environmental security in the South Caucasus and Caspian Sea region at the upcoming summit.

The conference, scheduled for November 11–22, will address critical environmental and climate issues, strategies for resolution, and increased investments in sustainability. Mammadov believes COP29 will play a crucial role in the global effort to limit the rise in average annual temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius, making it a significant event for all stakeholders.
