Activist Paul Watson arrested in Greenland for opposing whaling

Greenland police apprehended renowned environmental activist Paul Watson upon his ship’s arrival in Nuuk. The 73-year-old Canadian-American is known for his direct action tactics, including confronting whaling ships at sea and his appearance on the reality TV show “Whale Wars.”

During a refueling stop with 25 volunteer crew members on board, police boarded the ship, detaining Watson on a former Red Notice related to his previous anti-whaling endeavors. The Captain Paul Watson Foundation (CPWF) urged the Danish government to release him from this politically-motivated arrest, as Greenland is under Danish jurisdiction.

Reason for Arrest

Authorities stated Watson would face a district court for potential extradition to Japan. In the past, he faced extradition in Germany on charges from Costa Rica; however, he left the country, defying bail conditions. The situation now raises questions about Watson’s ongoing activism challenges.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as we follow Watson’s plight and its implications for the environmental movement.
