UAE May Join Gaza Peacekeeping Force

UAE Pledges Troops for Peacekeeping Mission in Gaza

In a groundbreaking move, the United Arab Emirates has publicly announced its willingness to contribute troops to a post-war peacekeeping mission in Gaza. This significant step, led by senior Emirati official Lana Nusseibeh, marks increased Arab involvement in Middle Eastern peace efforts.

Nusseibeh, the UAE’s Special Envoy to the UN, outlined the vision for a “temporary international mission” in Gaza in an op-ed for the Financial Times. The mission aims to address the humanitarian crisis, establish law and order, and help reunify Gaza with the West Bank under a legitimate Palestinian Authority.

This announcement aligns with the Biden Administration’s initiative to stabilize the region after prolonged conflict. However, challenges remain, especially from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration, which opposes frameworks leading to a two-state solution.

As the US pushes for a reformed PA and a roadmap towards a unified Palestinian government, the UAE’s commitment to peacekeeping in Gaza sets a positive precedent for Arab nations’ involvement in achieving lasting peace in the region.
