Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ President Ersin Tatar emphasized the unjust embargoes imposed on Turkish Cypriots for the past 60 years, stating there is no justification for such inhumane actions. The Greek Cypriot administration’s refusal to engage in agreements and their military agreements with third countries only escalate tensions on the island. Tatar also criticized Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias for making baseless statements, further highlighting historical mistakes that have made Southern Cyprus a target.
Tatar stressed the importance of maintaining peace on the island and highlighted the need for Turkey’s guarantee to ensure stability. He also spoke about TRNC’s participation in international organizations for recognition and their attendance at significant summits.
The decades-long dispute between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, stemming from ethnic attacks in the 1960s, led to Türkiye’s intervention in 1974 to protect Turkish Cypriots, resulting in the founding of the TRNC in 1983. Despite diplomatic efforts, the Cyprus issue remains unresolved due to the Greek Cypriot administration’s actions.
