Russia successfully intercepted a pair of US strategic bombers that were approaching its border over the Barents Sea. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that their airspace control detected the air targets and dispatched fighter jets to identify them as B-52H bombers from the US Air Force. The Russian jets approached the bombers, causing them to adjust their course without violating Russian airspace.
The Defense Ministry emphasized that the interception was carried out in accordance with international airspace rules over neutral waters and with safety measures in place. However, US authorities have not yet responded to Russia’s statement.
