Thousands of locals in Mallorca protested against overtourism on Sunday, with signs like “Your luxury, our misery” and “Set limits to tourism”. The islands, with nearly 1.2 million residents, were visited by 18 million tourists last year.
Protests have also erupted in Barcelona, Malaga, and the Canary Islands, highlighting issues like rising housing costs and low-paying jobs within the tourism industry.
One resident of Ibiza shared his struggle, earning €1,500-€1,800 a month while unable to afford rent, resulting in living in a caravan. Two worlds exist in Ibiza – from luxury to life in parking areas.
The regional government head emphasized the importance of peaceful protests without resorting to vandalism. In Barcelona, demonstrators confronted tourists with water pistols, urging them to leave.
