China and Philippines reach provisional agreement to ease tensions in the South China Sea
China and the Philippines have come to a provisional agreement to de-escalate tensions on the Second Thomas Shoal, a disputed area in the South China Sea. The deal, reached during talks in Manila, aims to replenish Filipino troops stationed on the shoal, where clashes between the two countries have occurred.
The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs stated, “Both sides continue to recognize the need to de-escalate the situation in the South China Sea and manage differences through dialogue and consultation.” Despite the agreement, China has not yet issued a response.
The Second Thomas Shoal, claimed by both countries, has been a point of conflict in recent months. A violent confrontation on June 17 saw Chinese forces seize Filipino navy boats and supplies, prompting international condemnation.
The tensions in the region have drawn concern from the United States, Japan, Australia, and other allies, who emphasize the importance of upholding the rule of law and freedom of navigation in the South China Sea.
