Oman Air CEO Aims to Target China as Strategic Market
Oman Air’s new CEO, Con Korfiatis, is looking to tap into the potential of the Chinese market as a strategic move for the airline’s growth. In an interview with AeroTime, Korfiatis highlighted the untapped opportunities in China, Africa, South Asia, and Europe. He emphasized a measured approach to the airline’s future milestones, focusing on consolidating its market position before launching new major projects.
By mid-2026, Oman Air plans to streamline its fleet by phasing out its 737 Next Gen aircraft and operating a unified fleet of 787 Dreamliners and 737 MAXs. The airline will maintain its two-class product offering with high-quality services in business and economy class.
Additionally, Oman Air’s entry into the oneworld Alliance in the second half of 2024 will expand its global reach and provide benefits to customers across partner airlines. The airline will focus on incrementally increasing frequency on some routes and introducing seasonal services for steady growth.
National Carrier Faces Financial Challenges
Despite making strides in recovery from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Oman Air has reported a loss of RO2bn in operations since 2011. The mismatch between unit revenues and costs has led to unsustainable debt levels, requiring government injections to sustain operations.
