Melilla Looks to Join EU Customs Union Amid Border Trade Dispute with Morocco
Melilla, a Spanish city on the northern coast of Africa, is seeking inclusion in the European Union’s Customs Union as its border trade with Morocco faces a standstill. The President of Melilla, Juan José Imbroda, has acknowledged the halt in cross-border trade and is pushing for a new direction for the city’s economy.
Imbroda emphasized the need for collaboration with the Andalusian government to pursue EU Customs Union membership, citing benefits such as smoother movement of goods and improved logistics. The current border closure has posed challenges for businesses, hindering commercial activities.
Despite ongoing political tensions and disputes over sovereignty, including the closure of trade borders since 2018, Melilla remains hopeful for a positive outcome. The recent reopening of borders for people in 2022 signals progress, but negotiations for the resumption of commercial trade continue between Morocco and Spain.
