Lebanese Photojournalist Carries Olympic Torch to Honor Fallen and Injured Journalists
In a touching display of solidarity, Lebanese photojournalist Christina Assi, who was severely wounded in an Israeli strike in south Lebanon, carried the Olympic torch in Paris to honor journalists who have been killed or injured in the field. Assi, joined by AFP colleagues and spectators, participated in the torch relay, a part of the pre-Olympic celebrations in France.
The relay was a poignant tribute to journalists like Reuters videographer Issam Abdallah, who lost his life in an October attack, and others who were injured while reporting along the Israeli-Lebanese border. Despite the tragic events, Assi remains courageous and determined to send a powerful message – the importance of protecting journalists worldwide.
As she held the torch, Assi expressed her hope for a future where journalists can work without fear and violence. Her participation in the relay serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by journalists and the urgent need for justice and accountability in cases of attacks on media personnel.
