Iran’s agriculture production increased by 19% in the year to March: Minister

Iran’s agriculture sector has achieved a significant milestone with a 19% increase in output to 131 million metric tons in the past year, as highlighted by the country’s agriculture minister. This growth is part of Iran’s broader efforts to reduce dependency on imports and enhance the value of its domestic agricultural production.

Minister Mohammad Ali Nikbakht revealed that wheat purchases from Iranian farmers surged to 10.3 million mt in the past year, leading to a substantial decrease in wheat imports from 7 million mt to 1.8 million mt. He emphasized that this trend is expected to continue, with domestic wheat purchases projected to exceed 11.5 million mt this year.

In addition to boosting agricultural output, Iran has also witnessed a rise in agrifood exports, surpassing $1 billion in the previous year. Furthermore, the agriculture sector’s added value has improved significantly, fostering a shift towards becoming a net exporter of products like poultry.

Despite facing challenges from US sanctions, Iran’s focus on strengthening its manufacturing and agriculture sectors has yielded positive results, creating opportunities for increased exports and job growth.
