The Greek government is taking steps to address the shortage of doctors in rural public hospitals and health centers. Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis announced plans to categorize regions based on need and offer better terms to attract physicians.
Under a new draft law, doctors who agree to work in regions with severe shortages will receive a salary increase of up to 3,600 euros annually. For specialized fields with the most significant gaps, the raise doubles. Those serving in areas with lesser shortages will also see pay increases.
Georgiadis emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the issue of staff shortages directly, granting him more power to manage the situation effectively. The legislation aims to incentivize doctors to fill critical gaps in healthcare services in rural areas.
