The Bangladeshi government implemented a curfew and deployed troops to control violent protests that led to the death of at least 75 people. Broadband and mobile internet services were also cut off since Thursday, escalating tensions. An anonymous local outside Dhaka described the situation as volatile, with clashes between protesters and security forces. Over 2,000 people sustained injuries in the unrest.
The protests, triggered by discontent over a 56% quota system in public jobs, resulted in the closure of educational institutions. Despite this, students have refused to vacate college and university campuses. The government plans to appeal to the Supreme Court to reduce the quota to 20% on Sunday.
Amnesty International condemned the government’s harsh response to dissent, calling it an indictment of their intolerance. The internet blackout has hindered communication, leaving Bangladeshi expats unable to contact their families.
