US to Place ‘Resident Adviser’ in Armenian Army, Deepening Strategic Partnership

The US government is set to deploy a “resident adviser” within the Armenian army, marking a significant milestone in the evolving relationship between Yerevan and Washington. This move, confirmed by a senior American diplomat during a recent visit to Armenia, aims to strengthen ties between the two nations.

US Under Secretary of State Uzra Zeya, while on a tour of the South Caucasus, highlighted the importance of having a US representative embedded within the Armenian armed forces. Describing it as a “welcome development,” Zeya emphasized that this initiative aligns with the upgraded US-Armenia relations categorized as a strategic partnership.

Furthermore, Washington and Yerevan recently initiated a joint military exercise, known as the Eagle Partner war games, involving troops from the US Army Europe, Africa, and the Kansas National Guard. This deepening cooperation comes at a time when Armenia, a traditional ally of Moscow, is shifting towards closer collaborations with Western nations, triggering concerns from Russia about its security interests.

In the midst of regional tensions, the deployment of a US adviser in the Armenian army signifies a new chapter in the geopolitical landscape of the South Caucasus, as rivalries and alliances continue to evolve.
