The UN human rights chief, Volkan Turk, called for accountability and dialogue in Bangladesh following reports of deadly violence during student protests. A curfew was imposed nationwide and the military was deployed as the death toll reached 75. Turk emphasized the need for all sides to show restraint and for security forces to adhere to international human rights standards.
Violent clashes continued on Friday, with at least 30 more fatalities reported in Dhaka. More than 2,000 people have been injured in the protests against a 56% quota system in public jobs, prompting the government to close educational institutions.
Despite the closures, students have remained on campus, refusing to back down. The quota, which reserves 30% for descendants of 1971 liberation war participants, is set to be challenged in the Supreme Court with a push to reduce it to 20% expected on Sunday.
Turk stressed the importance of engaging with the youth population to move forward from the crisis.
