In a recent development, Poland’s deputy defense minister Pawel Zalewski announced that Warsaw will not be involved in recruiting for the first Ukrainian Legion. Volunteers for the legion will be able to return to Poland after completing their service.
The Ukrainian Legion was part of a security agreement signed by President Volodymyr Zelensky and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, outlining further cooperation between the two countries.
Unlike other legions comprising foreign nationals, the Ukrainian Legion will be made up of Ukrainians. Recruitment will be done through Ukrainian consular offices, and volunteers will undergo training in Poland.
As of July 11, several thousand people have registered to participate in the legion. Warsaw also made a positive decision to help Ukraine acquire F-16 jets faster, according to President Zelensky.
