Turkey and Somalia have reached an agreement for Turkey to deploy navy support to Somali waters. This decision comes as Turkey plans to send an exploration vessel to search for oil and gas off the coast of Somalia. President Tayyip Erdogan has submitted a motion to the Turkish parliament seeking authorization for this deployment.
The Turkish Energy Ministry revealed the plan to send the exploration vessel as part of a hydrocarbon cooperation deal between the two countries. This move follows a defense and economic cooperation agreement signed earlier this year during the Somali Defense minister’s visit to Ankara.
Turkey has been a strong ally of Somalia, offering support in various sectors including education, healthcare, and infrastructure development. In 2017, Turkey opened its largest overseas military base in Mogadishu and continues to provide training to Somali military and police forces.
