Donald Trump, the U.S. Republican presidential candidate, stated he had a phone call with Ukraine leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy and promised to end the war with Russia. Trump expressed his intentions to bring peace and negotiate a deal for both sides to end the violence and move towards prosperity. However, if Trump wins the election in November, the continued support from the United States for Ukraine would be uncertain.
Zelenskyy confirmed the call and mentioned discussing steps for lasting peace at a personal meeting with Trump. Despite Trump’s promises to end the war quickly, his relationship with Russia and his criticisms towards NATO have raised concerns among Ukraine’s allies. Trump’s running mate JD Vance supports the isolationist wing of congressional Republicans, advocating for dropping aid to Ukraine.
Zelenskyy expressed willingness to work with Trump if he becomes the President, while acknowledging the impact of the U.S. election turbulence on his country. The history between Trump and Zelenskyy dates back to Trump’s time in the White House, where he faced impeachment for withholding military aid to Ukraine in exchange for political favors. Only time will tell how their relationship evolves if Trump returns to power.
