There were concerns raised by lawmakers about the possibility of Taiwan needing to provide more funds as “protection fees” to the US due to increasing arms purchases. Speculation also arose about whether a Trump-led US would intervene in a cross-strait conflict.
Former US national security adviser Robert O’Brien suggested that Taiwan should increase its defense spending to keep up with Beijing’s military capabilities. The US State Department reaffirmed the importance of Taiwan’s military purchases from the US for regional security.
Despite uncertainties surrounding Trump’s transactional nature, Taiwan remains committed to enhancing its defense capabilities and strengthening ties with the US to counter Beijing’s aggression.
