Sudanese rally against skyrocketing consumer prices

Amidst the ongoing military confrontations in Sudan, citizens are grappling with the severe economic repercussions, as prices of consumer goods soar and food items become scarce. The sharp increase in prices, coupled with the depreciation of the Sudanese pound against foreign currencies, has significantly impacted purchasing power.

Residents like Rafia’a Ahmed and Mohammed Hassan are expressing their concerns over the exorbitant price hikes in markets, making basic necessities unaffordable. Economic analyst Tarig Osman warns that unless the government intervenes, the country’s economic conditions are heading towards a steep decline.

As the Sudanese pound continues to depreciate, market prices will keep rising, further weakening purchasing power. The ongoing conflict and widespread job losses have already paralyzed the economic sector, with families struggling to make ends meet. The exchange rate in the parallel market has surpassed two thousand pounds per dollar, exacerbating the economic challenges faced by Sudanese citizens.

The situation in Sudan is dire, with thousands of deaths and millions displaced since April 15, 2023, due to military confrontations. Urgent measures are needed to address the economic crisis and alleviate the suffering of Sudanese families.
