Spanish police have made significant progress in tackling cyberattacks orchestrated by a pro-Russian group targeting public institutions and strategic sectors in Spain and other NATO countries. Three individuals have been arrested for their involvement in these attacks, which aimed to disrupt countries that have supported Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
The suspects were taken into custody in various locations across Spain, accused of carrying out distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks with terrorist intent. The attacks, orchestrated by the hacker group NoName057(16), used a proprietary software called DDoSia to flood websites and network resources with malicious traffic, rendering them unavailable.
NoName057(16) claimed responsibility for a wave of DDoS attacks on Swiss government websites ahead of a peace summit addressing the Ukrainian conflict. Their manifesto states a mission to counter “hostile and anti-Russian actions” by Western countries.
This recent crackdown on cybercriminals highlights the ongoing efforts to safeguard digital infrastructure and ensure the security of online activities, particularly amid geopolitical tensions.
