After serving 43 years for a murder she did not commit, Sandra Hemme has finally been released following the overturning of her conviction in the 1980 case of Patricia Jeschke’s death. The review of her case found no evidence linking her to the crime, except for a confession given under heavy sedation in a psychiatric hospital.
Now 64, Hemme is believed to have served the longest known wrongful conviction of a woman in US history. Her legal team at the Innocence Project expressed gratitude for her release and vowed to continue fighting to clear her name as her case is still under review.
The overturning of her conviction by Circuit Court Judge Ryan Horsman highlighted clear proof of Hemme’s innocence, including evidence that was never disclosed to her defense team at the time. The review also pointed to a local police officer, Michael Holman, as a suspect in the murder.
Released and reunited with her family, Hemme plans to support herself with the help of her legal team, as years spent in prison have left her ineligible for social security benefits.
