The U.S. has sentenced Russian businessman Maxim Marchenko to three years in prison for smuggling military-grade electronics to Russia. Marchenko, based in Hong Kong, admitted to smuggling and money laundering in New York.
Accused of sending dual-use OLED micro-displays to Russia, violating sanctions post Ukraine invasion, Marchenko and his co-conspirators used shell companies for the illegal transactions. The technology procured had military applications like rifle scopes and night vision goggles, as per the U.S. Justice Department.
Marchenko misrepresented the goods as meant for China and other countries, disbursing over $1.6 million to U.S. distributors. The court sentenced him to three years in prison with three years of supervised release, highlighting the severity of money laundering and smuggling charges.
