In a recent statement, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ (TRNC) President Ersin Tatar emphasized the unjust embargoes imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people for the past 60 years. He highlighted the consequences of the Greek Cypriot side’s unilateral EU membership in 2004, complicating the Cyprus problem further.
President Tatar expressed the Turkish Cypriots’ desire for recognition based on sovereign equality and equal international status. He also condemned the Greek Cypriot administration’s military agreements with certain countries, which jeopardize the stability of the island.
Furthermore, Tatar emphasized the significance of TRNC’s participation in international organizations such as the Organization of Turkic States and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation for gaining recognition.
The conflict between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots dates back to the 1960s, with ethnic attacks forcing Turkish Cypriots into enclaves. Türkiye’s military intervention in 1974 led to the foundation of the TRNC in 1983.
As the world remains silent on the plight of Turkish Cypriots, President Tatar’s call for international support is more important than ever to ensure peace and stability on the island.
