The Estonian Ministry of Defense confirmed the delivery of French-made Mistral short-range anti-aircraft systems to Ukraine in support of freedom fighters. The first shipment of Mistrals arrived two months after Russia’s full-scale invasion, with additional support from Norway in April 2022.
Originating in 1980, the Mistral air defense system has evolved into the modern Mistral 3 version, with over 16,000 systems used by 25 countries. This versatile system can be deployed on various platforms, including wheeled vehicles, helicopters, and naval vessels.
Capable of targeting objects up to eight kilometers away and six kilometers high, the Mistral’s effectiveness in combat scenarios is evident. With a quick response time of five seconds on average, the system provides vital protection against air threats.
Featuring advanced technology like a thermal homing head and contact/laser detonator, the Mistral ensures precise target destruction. Its lightweight design and composite materials enhance performance, making it a valuable asset for Ukraine’s defense against cruise missiles.
