Curfew and military intervention as student protest deaths reach 75 in Bangladesh

Amid ongoing violent student protests in Bangladesh, the death toll has climbed to 75, prompting the government to impose a curfew and deploy the military to control the situation. At least 30 people were killed in anti-government demonstrations in the past three days, with most of the deaths reported in Dhaka.

The country is currently facing a communications blackout with no mobile or broadband internet as the protests against the 56% quota system in public jobs continue to surge. The government has closed educational institutions, but students have refused to leave college and university campuses.

Currently, 30% of the quota in public jobs is reserved for the sons and grandsons of those who participated in Bangladesh’s war of liberation in 1971. The government plans to file an appeal with the Supreme Court to reduce the quota to 20% on Sunday.

With over 2,000 people injured during clashes across the country, the situation remains volatile in Bangladesh as the government works to restore peace and stability amidst the protests.
