The cornerstone of the long-awaited Buk Bijela hydroelectric power plant in Bosnia and Herzegovina was laid back in May 2021. However, despite the initial excitement, the construction of the plant has yet to commence after two and a half years.
The project, a joint venture between Republika Srpska (RS) and Serbia, is estimated to cost around 250 million euros and has faced numerous obstacles.
Stalled by disputes over concessions with Chinese companies and concerns raised by Montenegro before UNESCO regarding the environmental impact on Durmitor National Park, the future of the project remains uncertain.
The Constitutional Court of BiH has been involved in resolving the concession dispute and transferring the case to the BiH Concessions Commission, further delaying progress.
As stakeholders wait for a decision, the fate of the Buk Bijela hydroelectric plant hangs in the balance, leaving questions about the future of this vital energy project.
