US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has warned that Iran is close to producing fissile material for a nuclear bomb in just a week or two.
Blinken expressed concerns at the Aspen Security Forum, stating that the situation is precarious since the termination of the nuclear agreement. Iran, previously a year away from nuclear capabilities, is now much closer due to recent developments.
However, he reassured that Iran has not developed a nuclear weapon yet, but the situation is being closely monitored by the US with a preference for a diplomatic solution.
Efforts to revive the Iran nuclear deal stalled in 2022 due to disagreements, and the Biden administration no longer sees a return to the deal as possible. Iran’s openness to engagement with the West as per its new president remains a potential avenue for future negotiations.
