UK to renew support for UNRWA refugee agency

The new Labour government in Britain has announced a resumption of funding to the UN Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA, urging Israel to allow more aid into Gaza. Following accusations by Israel that some UNRWA staff were involved in a Hamas attack, several countries had halted their funding to the agency. However, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy assured parliament that UNRWA had taken steps to ensure neutrality, leading to a pledge of £21 million in new funding.

Lammy highlighted the severe malnutrition crisis in Gaza, emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian aid. He praised UNRWA for its central role in providing aid at the necessary scale. Other countries like Japan, Germany, Italy, Australia, and Canada have also resumed funding to the agency.

Despite Israeli accusations of complicity with Hamas, a review led by Catherine Colonna found no evidence that UNRWA staff were militants. Previous concerns raised by former Foreign Secretary David Cameron have been addressed under the new Labour government, showing a renewed commitment to supporting Palestinian refugees.
