Starmer invites Zelensky to Cabinet meeting in show of support

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at a special meeting with his top ministers on Friday, showcasing support for Ukraine and a new plan to disrupt Russia’s evasion of shipping sanctions.

Following a forum with European leaders, Starmer will welcome Zelensky to address the UK cabinet. This historic event marks the first time a foreign leader has spoken to the British cabinet since US President Bill Clinton in 1997.

Zelensky will introduce a “call to action” against Russia’s ‘shadow fleet’ of oil tankers, used to circumvent sanctions. Starmer plans to assure Ukraine of enhanced support to combat Russia’s aggressive actions, including a new defence export support treaty.

Britain recently imposed sanctions on Russian oil transport vessels and reaffirmed unwavering support for Ukraine. The new measures include data sharing to pinpoint and address individual vessels within the shadow fleet. The defence treaty will provide Ukraine access to 3.5 billion pounds of export finance for defense purposes.

Starmer’s commitment to ongoing military support for Ukraine, as well as the collaborative efforts to counter Russian aggression, signals a strong partnership and solidarity in the face of global challenges.
