The Israeli war on Gaza has led to a loss of support for the US among young people, according to Singapore’s defense minister, Ng Eng Hen. In an interview with Foreign Policy magazine at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado, Ng expressed concern over the impact of the conflict on youth across many countries.
Ng highlighted the anger in Southeast Asia towards the West’s involvement in the Israeli war on Gaza, warning that the violence could radicalize a new generation of terrorists. He emphasized the need for the violence to end and mentioned Singapore’s humanitarian efforts in Gaza.
Ng also addressed the broader implications of the conflict, cautioning against the escalation of tensions in the region. He stressed the importance of avoiding a third conflict in Asia, especially with ongoing crises in Ukraine and Gaza.
Regarding the Abraham Accords, Ng noted that the war in Gaza had disrupted diplomatic relations with Israel. He raised concerns about the difficulty some states face in resuming relations due to domestic political pressures.
Despite international condemnation and calls for a cease-fire, Israel’s continued offensive on Gaza has resulted in a devastating toll on the Palestinian population, with thousands killed and injured, and widespread destruction in the region.
