The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) Punjab made a major breakthrough by arresting senior Al-Qaeda leader, Amin ul Haq, a close aide of Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks in the U.S. Ul Haq was apprehended in an intelligence-based operation in Sarai Alamgir, Gujrat district of Punjab.
CTD Punjab has registered a case against ul Haq for planning sabotage targeting key installations in the province. Known to be associated with bin Laden since 1996, ul Haq’s arrest is vital in the fight against terrorism in Pakistan and globally, as he was listed among the global terrorists by the United Nations.
Pakistan has witnessed an increase in terror activities, especially after TTP resumed attacks following the end of a ceasefire with the government in November 2022. The country experienced a spike in violence-related fatalities in 2023, primarily in KP and Balochistan.
To combat extremism and terrorism, the federal government has approved Operation Azm-i-Istehkam, signaling a renewed effort to eradicate terrorism from the nation.
