The charges stem from accusations of gathering intelligence for the US CIA on a Russian company involved in producing tanks for the conflict in Ukraine. The trial has been criticized by Gershkovich’s newspaper, labeling it as predetermined.
Despite being detained since March 29, 2023, the Kremlin has yet to present substantial evidence against him. The proceedings have been shrouded in secrecy, citing state secrets as the reason for closing them off to the media.
