Paraguayan authorities have approved the purchase of six Brazilian-built Embraer A-29 Super Tucano aircraft for deployment in security and crime-fighting efforts. The decision was announced in Asunción on Thursday.

Government spokeswoman Paula Carro confirmed that the necessary paperwork has been signed to acquire the planes by exception, with funding arrangements being made by the Economy Ministry.

Chairman of the National Defense Council (Codena), Cibar Benítez, emphasized the need for the aircraft to enhance airspace sovereignty in combating organized crime and drug trafficking.

The acquisition of the Super Tucanos is part of President Santiago Peña’s $500 million investment in defense and security over the coming years.

Benítez also hinted at future purchases for the land forces in the near future.

Paraguay is set to receive the six A-29s before the end of the year, according to a statement from the Defense Ministry.

The decision to acquire the Super Tucanos came after a meeting between President Peña and officials from Brazil’s Embraer and Defense Ministry earlier in the year.

The Paraguayan Air Force currently operates AT-27 Tucano turboprop training aircraft, the precursor to the Super Tucano model, which has previously been sold to Nigeria and reportedly eyed by Uruguay.
