Pakistan reacts to US ‘concern’ over PTI ban

Foreign Office Responds to US Concerns on PTI Ban

The Foreign Office (FO) of Pakistan addressed the concerns raised by the United States regarding the government’s decision to ban Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). FO spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch emphasized that foreign commentary on Pakistan’s domestic affairs is unwarranted interference. The recent decisions of Pakistani courts highlight the strength of the country’s legal system in dealing with internal challenges.

The federal government announced the intention to ban PTI and initiate Article 6 proceedings against key members, citing reasons such as foreign funding allegations and past incidents. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar confirmed the government’s stance and mentioned plans to bring the matter to the Supreme Court.

In response, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller expressed concerns over potential restrictions on PTI. He emphasized the importance of democratic principles and condemning political violence, while acknowledging the recent court rulings supporting PTI.

The ongoing debate reflects the complexities of politics and governance in Pakistan, with international actors closely monitoring developments.
