Kremlin reacts to EU’s proposed military plan — RT Russia & former USSR

The European Union is on the brink of a major confrontation as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pushes for the creation of a “European Defense Union.” This move, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, signifies a shift towards escalating security tensions on the continent.

Von der Leyen’s political program, unveiled as part of her re-election bid, emphasizes the need for a strong European Defense and Security framework. Highlighting the conflict between Moscow and Kiev as a catalyst for European security concerns, she stressed the importance of investing in Ukraine’s security.

However, Peskov criticized this approach, citing it as evidence of Europe’s increasing militarization and reliance on confrontational methods in foreign policy. He reiterated that Russia poses no threat to the EU and that its actions in Ukraine are to protect its interests due to the lack of dialogue with EU countries.

Despite criticism from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, von der Leyen is expected to secure enough parliamentary votes for re-election. Under her leadership, the EU has increased military aid to Ukraine, making it the largest supporter of Kiev. Russia, on the other hand, has condemned this support, warning it could prolong the conflict.\
