Kenyan police officers in Haiti, alongside Haitian counterparts, recently seized control of a port that had been under gang control for five months. The port, previously controlled by gangs, was successfully recaptured by the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission. The operation took place in the heart of Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital, after an intense exchange of fire with the resisting gangs.
The port’s recapture is significant as it allows the delivery of essential supplies, including humanitarian aid, to the people of Haiti. This mission marks a crucial step in restoring order and security in the troubled Caribbean nation, which has seen over 580,000 people displaced by gang violence since March 2024.
This successful operation came shortly after the declaration of a state of emergency in several municipalities controlled by gangs. The intervention by Kenyan officers, in coordination with local authorities, is part of the MSS mission authorized by the UN Security Council to support the Haitian government in maintaining law and order.
