In a controversial ruling, a judge in Milan has ordered Italian journalist Giulia Cortese to pay €5,000 in damages to Premier Giorgia Meloni for “body shaming” her height in social media posts, with an additional suspended fine of €1,200. The dispute began in October 2021 when Cortese posted a digitally altered picture of Meloni, provoking a strong reaction from the politician.
Cortese referred to Meloni as a “little woman” in subsequent exchanges, highlighting her height of allegedly 1.2 meters. Meloni’s actual height is estimated to be between 1.58 and 1.63 meters, though she has never officially confirmed this detail.
The journalist criticized the ruling, questioning the government’s handling of freedom of expression. Meloni’s lawyer indicated that if the sentence stands, the damages received will be donated to charity, emphasizing the importance of the verdict as a precedent in addressing public criticism.
