Former presidents including Jacob Zuma have been invited as esteemed guests for the opening of parliament on Thursday, as announced by National Council of Provinces chairperson Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane. However, despite the invitation, it is uncertain whether Zuma will attend.
President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the opening, marking the seventh administration tenure. The event is estimated to cost between R6m and R14m. Other notable invitees include former presidents Thabo Mbeki and Kgalema Motlanthe, along with various former speakers and deputy presidents.
Although Zuma’s party had ordered MPs not to attend the first sitting of parliament as a form of protest, a spokesperson confirmed Zuma’s intentions not to attend the event, citing tensions with Ramaphosa.
Speaker of the National Assembly Thoko Didiza confirmed the final list of attendees would be revealed on Thursday. The event, held at Cape Town City Hall, serves as a platform for the president to outline the government’s plans and vision for the upcoming term.
