The US military is wrapping up its temporary pier mission off the Gaza coast after facing various challenges within its roughly 20-day operational period. The focus will now shift to bringing humanitarian aid through an Israeli port instead.

Deputy commander of US Central Command Vice Adm. Brad Cooper expressed satisfaction with the pier’s performance, emphasizing that it successfully facilitated the delivery of 19.4 million pounds of aid to Gaza’s civilians. Going forward, aid will be routed through the Ashdod port in Israel or land crossings into Gaza, boosting efficiency and sustainability.

Despite initial setbacks, including storm damage and logistical hurdles, Cooper praised Israeli cooperation and the ongoing support in the aid delivery process. President Joe Biden’s push for the temporary pier aimed to bolster humanitarian assistance in Gaza, although its effectiveness has been limited amid the continuous conflict between Hamas and Israel.

Overall, the US military’s efforts have demonstrated resilience despite challenges, ensuring crucial aid reaches those in need.
