Moscow has officially warned that it will leave all options on the table in its response to the planned deployment of US nuclear-capable Tomahawk and hypersonic missiles in Germany. Former DoD analyst Karen Kwiatkowski explains why Washington’s decision is so dangerous, and why the Biden administration is proceeding anyway.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told reporters that US plans to deploy long-range cruise and hypersonic missiles in Europe may prompt a tit-for-tat response from Russia. Ryabkov emphasized that the security of the Kaliningrad region, targetable by the US missiles from Germany, will be guaranteed.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that hosting American long-range weapons in Germany is in response to the threat from Russia. The planned missile deployment raises concerns of irreversible nuclear escalation, similar to the tensions of the 1980s Euromissile crisis.

Former US Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Kwiatkowski warns of the domestic and global implications of the deployment, including heightened regional tensions and potential security crises. The move challenges nuclear risk reduction efforts and past agreements between the US and Russia.

With NATO’s expansion and Pentagon’s aggressive initiatives, the 2026 missile deployment could lead to unforeseen consequences and further destabilize the region.
