UK: David Lammy hits back at JD Vance’s ‘Islamist’ comment

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has sparked controversy by refusing to condemn US Vice Presidential candidate JD Vance for suggesting that under a Labour government, the UK could become the first “Islamist” state with nuclear weapons. Lammy expressed a sense of solidarity with Vance due to their shared working-class backgrounds and Christian faith.

Vance’s remarks at a conservative conference raised eyebrows as he speculated on which country could be the first “truly Islamist” state with nuclear capabilities, ultimately pointing a finger at the UK under Labour leadership. While Labour officials have downplayed Vance’s comments, Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the controversial nature of President Trump’s choice in running mate.

Lammy, however, maintained that Vance’s views do not align with the diverse voter base that supported Labour in the election. Despite Vance’s focus on domestic issues, he is a staunch advocate for supporting Israel and confronting Iran.
