Salt Municipality, Italy Gov’t Sign €2.5M Green Sal Deal

Salt Municipality has signed a €2.5 million agreement with the Italian government, facilitated by UN-Habitat, to implement the “Green Al-Salt” project. This initiative, in partnership with UNESCO, aims to revitalize public spaces and preserve living heritage in Salt City, following its UNESCO World Heritage Site designation.

The project will address urban development challenges and focus on enhancing economic and social well-being. Mayor Mohamed Hiyari outlined the implementation strategy, which includes assessing public spaces using GIS, conducting an inventory of intangible cultural heritage, and developing a strategy for public spaces.

Interventions such as lighting, seating, and green spaces will be implemented in selected public spaces, along with vocational training programs to protect cultural heritage elements. The project also aims to create job opportunities for the residents of Salt.

Through collaboration with local communities and stakeholders, the project will promote safety and hospitality traditions in the city. It will also build the capacity of municipal employees to develop and maintain inclusive public spaces.

Overall, the “Green Al-Salt” initiative will not only preserve Salt’s cultural heritage but also create a sustainable and vibrant urban environment for its residents.
