In a recent interview, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated that there are no plans to change the electoral law to make it easier for the winning party to secure a parliamentary majority. Despite this, Mitsotakis emphasized his belief in single-party governments and expressed confidence in New Democracy’s ability to succeed in the next election in 2027.
Following a significant drop in voter turnout and dissatisfaction with the ruling government, both New Democracy and SYRIZA experienced declines in their share of the vote. The challenge of achieving a parliamentary majority with around 28% of the votes highlights the complexities of the electoral system.
While Mitsotakis hopes for a reduced number of parties entering parliament in the next election, he faces the challenge of maintaining popularity as the government progresses into its second term. The upcoming election will test the ability of New Democracy to secure a majority and address the concerns of voters who may have cast their ballots against the opposition rather than for the government.
