Call for Independent Review into Perinatal Deaths Sparks HSE Inquiry

00209ce6 800

The HSE has announced a confidential review into baby and maternal deaths during childbirth from 2021-2023, while Safer Births Ireland urges the government to set up an independent review into perinatal deaths. The campaign group highlights concerns over fetal heartbeat monitoring, adherence to standards, patient listening, and recognition of labor signs. Co-founder Claire Cullen’s personal experience drives the call for action, following the tragic loss of her son Aaron in 2016.

Safer Births Ireland’s efforts have gained traction, with a request for an independent review sent to the Taoiseach and a briefing held at Leinster House. The HSE plans to involve the public and patients in the inquiry, which will review case notes and engage expert assessors across various medical specialties.

While the Irish maternity system is considered safe by international standards, Safer Births Ireland seeks more transparency in the review process. The upcoming inquiry aims to ensure accountability and improvements in maternal and infant healthcare in Ireland.
